QuestionAnswer
Functional group A group of atoms responsible for the reactions in a particular compound. (REactive site (usually polar) in an organic compound)
Monomer The repeating unit(group of atoms) in a polymer
Polymer - a giant organic molecule made of repeating units
Dehydration synthesis The joining of two molecules by the removal of water
Hydrolysis the splitting of a larger molecule into 2 smaller ones by the addition of H2O
Protein organic compound composed mainly of carbon hydrogen oxygen and nitrogen
Polypeptide a molecule of 3 or more amino acids bonded together
Dipeptide a molecule of two amino acids bonded together
Peptide bond the bond formed when amino acids join together through dehydration syntheses
Carbohydrate It is an organic compound that consists only of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. (Simple sugar or polymer of sugars.)
Monosaccharide 1 unit of sugar
Disaccharide 2 simple sugars bonded together
Polysaccharide 3 or more simple sugars bonded together
Glycogen It is a polysaccharide and a storage form in the human body
Cellulose It is a polysaccharide. ( non digestible form found in plants) no enzymes
Enzyme RNA or protein molecule that acts as a catalyst
Starch It is a polysaccharide. It's the storage form found in plants
Lipidis non polar organic compounds
Substrate the reactant the enzyme "fits"
Fatty acid A carboxylic acid with a long chain and it is either saturated or unsaturated
Phospholipid like triglycerides but contain a phosphate group
Steroids lipids composed of four carbon rings bonded together
Hydrophobic Any substance repelling or failing to mix with water
Hydrophilic Any substance that mixes with water or dissolves in water
Saturated all single bonds holding the maximum number of hydrogens
Unsaturated at least one double bond holding less hydrogens
ATP an adenine molecule with 3 3phosphates attached and it is also the energy used in cellular respiration
Grade - 1/2 25/25 I changed functional group, carbohydrate - 1/2,

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
