What are Mendelian traits determined by? A single gene
What are multifactorial genes determined by? One or more genes and the environment (Most traits are multifactorial)
What made the pea plant such a great study model for Mendel? 1: Many readily available traits 2: Normally self-fertilizing 3: Ease of making crosses with large flowers
What were the three important concepts that Mendel discovered? 1: Dominant and Recessive traits 2: The concept of genes and alleles 3: The Segregation of alleles
What does Mendel's Law of Segregation state? There are two copies of each gene (alleles) that are segregated (separated) from one another during transmission from parent to offspring.
What is a testcross? When an individual with an unknown genotype is crossed with a homozygous recessive individual and the offspring are observed.
What is a dihybrid offspring? When offspring are hybrids with respect to both traits
What is the Law of independent assortment? Alleles of different genes assort independently of each other during gamete formation
What is Locus? The physical location of a gene on a chromosome
How do you calculate probability? Divide the number of times an event can happen/ by the total number of possible outcomes
When would you use/how do you use the product rule in probability? 1: Used when relating independent events Ex: If a coin is tossed twice 2: Multiply the two percentages together
When would you use/how do you use the sum rule in probability? 1: Used when relating dependent events Ex: Answers that occur in alternative ways, answering an either/or question 2: Add the two percentages together
