| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls what happens in the cell |
| Chromosones | Made from long molecules called DNA. there are 23 pairs of them in a human cell's nucleus |
| DNA molecules | These molecules carry the genetic code that determines the characteristics of a living thing |
| Gene | A short section of DNA. Each codes for a specific protein |
| Allele | Different forms of the same gene; either brown eye or blue eye |
| Dominant Allele | Always shows even if the individual only has one copy of the allele. You only need one Copy of the allele for brown to have brown eyes (two copies will still give you brown) |
| Recessive Allele | Only shows if the individual has two copies Of this allele. You need two copies of the allele for blue eyes to have blue eyes. |
| Genotype | Our genetic makeup for example 'Bb' or 'bb'. |
| Phenotype | The caracteristics which show up in our appearence for example 'brown eyes' or 'blue eyes' |
| Heterozygous | These individuals carry 2 different allele |
| Homozygous | These individuals carry 2 copies of the same allele |
