Biology Week # 9
Dixon Biology Week # 9
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | The control center of the cell. Contains the genetic information |
| Evolution | Change in a species over time. |
| Autotrophic | an organism that can make its own food by underg0ing photosynthesis |
| Haploid | having one copy of each chromosome( like a sex cell) |
| Chloroplast | organelle that contains photosynthetic pigments . (ex Chlorophyll) Makes sugars for the cell |
| Mitochondria | "Powerhouse" of the cell: where glucose gets broken down for energy by cellular respiration |
| Phylogeny | Evolutionary history of an organism. Can be diagrams using a cladogram |
| Diploid | Having two copies of each chromosome (like a body cell) |
| Genetic Drift | Alteration of allelic frequencies (or how often you see that allele in a population) due to evolution. |
| RNA | The nucleic acid responsible for carrying DNA's message out of the nucleus |
| Ribosome | Organelle Responsible for protein synthesis |
| Adaptation | organisms ability to change due to its environment |
| heterotrophic | an organism that needs to eat other organisms to sustain its energy needs |
| Allele | one of the possibilities of a form of a gene |
| Convergent Evolution | Unrelated organisms becoming more alike due to a shared environment. |
| Photosynthesis | the process of creating sugars using the energy form the sun and Carbon dioxide in the air |
| Biology | The study of life |
| Cellular Respiration | The process of creating ATP by breaking down sugars made in photosynthesis. Occurs in the mitochondria of a cell |
| divergent evolution | related organisms evolving to become less similar |
| genetics | the study of inheritance |
| cell wall | resent in a plant cell, not an animal cell: provides the cell with a rigid structure |
| abiogenesis | "without life's origin" |
| gamete | a reproductive cell (sperm or egg) |
| gradualism | evolution that occurs slowly over a long period of time. |
