| symbiosis | a close, long term relationship between two organisms |
| mutualism | both organisms benefit from the relationship |
| parasitism | one organism is harmed while the other benefits |
| commensalism | one organism benefits while the other is neither helped nor is it harmed |
| species richness | the number of species in a community |
| species evenness | the relative abundance of each species in a community |
| species area effect | the pattern where there is more species richness in larger areas than smaller areas |
| disturbance | events that change communities by removing or destroying organisms, or altering resources organisms need to live |
| stability | the tendancy for a community to remain in relativly constant conditions |
| ecological succession | the gradual sequential regrowth of a community of organisms |
| primary succession | the development of a community in an area that has never supported life before, like bare rock |
| secondary succession | the sequintial replacement of organisms in a community that has been disrupted |
| pioneer species | the species that predominate early in succession |
| climax community | when a community reaches its stable endpoint |
