Vocab Chapters 5-7

Vocab

WordDefinition
1.Passive Transport (97) Passing through the cell membrane without any energy
2.Diffusion (97) Simplest type of Passive Transport.
3.Concentration Gradient (97) The difference in concentration of molecules across a distance.
4.Equilibrium (97) Concentration of molecules will be the same throughout the amount of space that the object occupies.
5.Osmosis (98) Water molecules diffusing across a cell membrane from a higher concentration to a lower concentration.
6.Hypotonic (98) The concentration of solute molecules outside cell is lower than in the cytosol.
7.Isotonic (99) The concentration of solute molecules outside the cell and in the cytosol is equal.
8.Contractile Vacuole (99) Organelles that remove water.
9.Turgor Pressure (100) The pressure that water molecules exert against the cell wall.
10.Plasmolysis (100) In a hypertonic environment; the cell shrinks away from cell wall and turgor pressure is lost. The reason plants wilt without water.
11.Cytolysis (100) When cells burst.
12.Facilitated Diffusion (101) The process for molecules that can't readily diffuse through cells.
13.Carrier Protein (101) The specific protein that moves molecules across the cell membrane.
14.Ion Channel (101) A type of transport that involves membrane protein.
15.Active Transport (103) Moving materials from a lower concentration to a higher concentration.
16.Sodium-Potassium Pump (103) An active transport in animal cells.
17.Endocytosis (105) When cells ingest external fluids, macromolecules, and large particles.
18.Veside (105) A membrane bound organelle.
19.Pinocytosis (105) Involves the transport of solutes and fluids.
20.Phagocytosis (105) The transport on large particles or whole cells.
21.Phagocyte (105) Uses phagocytosis to ingest bacteria and viruses that invade the body.
22.Exocytosis (106) A substance is released from the cell through a vesicle that transports the substance to the cell surface and then fuses with the membrane to let the substance out of the cell.
23.Hypertonic (98) The concentration of solute molecules outside the cell is higher than in the cytosol.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
