Membrane
| Name | facts |
|---|---|
| membranes | cell membranes are made up of two kinds of molecule: phospholipids, which form the bulk of the membrane. proteins, which are scattered around the membrane. some molecules of carbohydrates and cholesterol may also be present. |
| phospholipid | A special kind of lipid molecule. It is made of a glycerol molecule with a phosphate group and two fatty acid chains attached. The phosphate group is hydrophilic (hydro=water philic=loving) because its a charge. It is soluble in water. |
| More about phospholipids....... | The fatty acid chains are made of hydrocarbons. They are hydrophobic (hydro=water phobic=hating). They do not have charge and they are insoluble in water. Phospholipids pack together in a membrane. They form a double layer called a bilayer. |
| Proteins | In a membrane there are many different sorts of proteins with complex shapes. The proteins are scattered around in the membrane and are always changing there positions. There are large proteins that span the whole bilayer.these are called intrinsic proteins |
| More about proteins... | there are smaller proteins on just one side of the bilayer. these are called extrinsic proteins. some proteins have carbohydrates attached to them. These are called glycoproteins. sometimes carbohhdrate chains attach to phospholipids to form glycolipids. |
| cholesterol | in many membranes cholesterol is present. this helps to keep the membrane stable. cholesterol is a lipid like substance called a steriod. |
| The fluid- mosaic model of the membrane structure | the way the molecules in a membrane are arranged is called the fluid-mosaic model of membrane structure. ( fluid= moving, mosaic= made of pieces) |
