Terms for chapter eighteen section three: Modern Biology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Producers | Organisms that capture energy and use it to make organic molecules.(Autotrophs manufacture their own food. Ex: plants, some protists and some bacteria. |
| Chemosynthesis | The proccess where autotrophic bacteria uses energy stored in inorganic molecules to produce carbohydrates. |
| Gross Primary Productivity | The rate at which producers in an ecosystem capture the energy of sunlight by producing organic compounds. |
| Biomass | Organic material that has been produced in an ecosystem. |
| Net Primary Productivity | The rate at which biomass accumulates. |
| Consumers | Organisms that obtain energy by consuming organic molecules made by other organisms. (Heterotrophs cannot manufacture their own food. They get energy by eating other organisms or organic wastes. Ex: all animals and fungi, and most protists and bacteria.) |
| Herbivores | Organisms that eat producers. |
| Carnivores | Organisms that eat other consumers. |
| Omnivores | Organisms that eat both producers and consumers. |
| Detritivores | Organisms that feed on/ eat the "garbage" or waste of an ecosystem. |
| Decomposers | Organisms that cause decay by breaking down complex molecules into simpler molecules. |
| Trophic Level | Indicates an organism's posistion in a sequence of energy transfers. |
| Food Chain | A single pathway of feeding relationships among organisms in an ecosystem that results in energy transfer. |
| Food Web | Interrelated food chains in an ecosystem. |
