Terms for chapter eighteen section two: Modern Biology

QuestionAnswer
Habitat The place where an organism lives.
Biotic Factors The living components of the environment. This includes all of the living things that affect the organism.
Abiotic Factors The physical and chemical characteristics of the environment.
Tolerance Curve A graph of performace versus values of an environmental variable.
Acclimation When organisms can adjust their tolerance to abiotic factors.
Conformers Organisms that do not regulate their internal conditions; they change as their external environment changes.
Regulators Organisms that use energy to control some of their internal conditions.
Dormancy A state of reduced activity.
Migration To move to a more favorable habitat.
Niche The specific role, or way of life of an organism within its environment.
Generalists Species with broad niches; they can tolerate a range of conditions and use a variety of resources.
Specialists Species that hve narrow niches.
