HBiology(Cells)

Question/TermAnswer
Waters effect for the human body... Fill blood vessels and move dissolved molecules throughout the body Has a slight charge allowing reactions to occur Often loses a Hydrogen
Hydrophillic? Water LOVING(vinegar/salt
Hydrophobic? Water HATING(oil)
pH? Measurement of how ACIDIC or BASIC a solution is(H+ is measured)
Basic(OH-) Solution? 8-14(most basic)
Acidic(H+) Solution? 0-6(most acidic)
7 on pH scale? Neutral
Enzymes(key)? A PROTEIN that SPEEDS up RATE of CHEMICAL REACTION in a LIVING organism(does not change due to reaction)
Substrate(door)? MOLECULE in which the Enzyme REACTS
Macro-nutrients? Provide ENERGY 1 Carbohydrates 2 Protein 3 Fats, Lipids
Micro-nutrients? Contain NO ENERGY, proper GROWTH/FUNCTION 1 Vitamins 2 Minerals 3 Water
All diseases begin with... MUTATION of a SINGLE CELL
Prokaryotic? NO nucleus(BACTERIA)
Eukaryotic? NUCLEUS and ORGANNELLES
Plasma Membrane? Where the EXCHANGE between CELL and ENVIRONMENT occur(Nutrients IN/Waste OUT)
Volume(cell)? Determines how many nutrients are needed and how much waste is produced
As cell size increases... Volume increases FASTER than Surface area
In Eukaryotic cell, cell membrane is made up of... PHOSPHOLIPIDS
Head of Phospholipid is... Hydrophillic
Tail of Phospholipid is... Hydrophobic(head must protect tails)
Phospholipids? Semipermeable, SELECTIVELY allows the passage of NUTRIENTS INTO the cell and WASTE OUT
Factors that influence permeability(3)... Smaller mol pass through easier Ions are LESS permeable Water and Gases pass through easier
Cytoplasm? Any fluid within plasma membrane(aqueous interior)
Organelle(s)? Small structures suspended in Cytoplasm having a specific function
Nucleus? Houses genetic material(DNA) "Blue Print"
Nucleolus? Produces ribosomes
Mitochondria? Energy production(ATP)
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum(ER)? Produces lipid molecules, bile and cholesterol Adds OH- to petroleum products(pesticides) turning it hydrophilic
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum(ER)? Ribosomes/Protein Production
Golgi apparatus? Packages and SECRETES to outside of cell
Lysosome? Break down Foreign Material and dying Organelles as well as cell self distruction
Cytoskeleton? Maintains shape and assists movement of cell parts
Tissue? Cells of the SAME type that perform a common function in the body
Connective Tissue? Binds and supports body parts(bone, blood..)
Muscular Tissue? Move the body and its parts
Nervous Tissue? Receives stimuli and conducts nerve impulses
Epithelial? Covers body surface and lines body cavities
Organ? TWO or more TYPES of TISSUE working TOGETHER to perform a function(unique and irreplaceable)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
