Biology targets flash cards

QuestionAnswer
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions.
Atom Smallest possible unit of an element that retains the physical and chemical properties of its elements
Isotope Atoms of element that have the same atomic number but different mass numbers. They have the same amount of protons but a different amount of neutrons.
Atomic number The number of protons in an atom
Atomic mass Number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Ions and the types of ions The number of protons does not equal the number of electrons. Cation- Less electrons than protons. Anion- Less protons than electrons.
Electrons Light negatively charged particles that orbit around molecules. The more distant they are from the nucleus, the stronger they are. Electrons -1 charge.
Protons and neutrons Protons +1 charge. Neutrons- no charge.
