Portable Network Graphic (.png) | This format is often used for graphics on the World Wide Web. It can support up to 32-bit color as well as effects such as transparency. It is the native file format for Macromedis's Fireworks MX graphics program. |
Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg or .jpeg) | This format is used for pphotographs and other high-color images. It supports millions of colors and can be colors and can be compressed. It does not support transparency. |
Graphics Interchange Format (.gif) | GIF files are popular for use on the World Wide Web. They can contain up to 256 colors. They are used for cartoons, logos, graphics with transparent areas, and animations. |
Bitmap (.bmp) | BMP is the Microsoft graphics file format and is used frequently for bitmap images. |
Wireless Bitmap (.wbmp) | The Wireless Bitmap format is used for displayed images on Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) pages on mobile devices such as personla digital assistants (PDAs). It uses a 1-bit format, so it can display only two colors- black and white. |
Tagged Image File Format (.tif or tiff) | TIFF files are used for storing bitmap images. This format is commonly used in desktip publishing and other multimedia applications. |
PICT | PICT is the file format used by programs that run on Apple Macintosh computers. |
Photoshop (.psd) | PSD is the file format used by the Adobe Photoshop graphics program. |
