Color Terms

What are the primary colors? red, blue, yellow
What is color? different reflections of light

What is hue? each different hue is a different wavelength of light
What is the color wheel? most important tool used when designing, shows primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors
What are the secondary colors? violet, green, organge
What are the tertiary colors? red violet, blue violet, blue green, yellow green, yellow orange, red orange
What does saturated mean? There is no black or white in any of the colors
Tints A saturated color mixed with pure white color
Shades A saturated color with black added to darken it
Warm colors red, orange, yellow
Cool colors blue, green, violet
Neutral colors black, gray, white, brown, tan
Color harmonies monochromatic, analogous, complementary, triad, split-complementary neutral, accented neutral
Monochromatic they are achieved by using tints and shades of only one color
Analogous using 3 or more colors that are next to each other on the color wheel
Complementary 2 colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel
Triad 3 colors located equidistant on the color wheel
Split-complementary using any color and the two colors located next to that colors complementary
Neutral any combo of all neutral colors
Accented neutral neutral scheme with one color
Double complementary two opposite colors
