what theory did Selye come up with? General Adaption Response (GAR)
What are the 3 stages of GAR? Alarm, Resistance, and Exhaustion
describe stage 1: Alarm this is when we know there is stress, and we decide to act on it. to do something about it
describe stage 2: Resistance when we continue to trudge on, dealing with whatever it is we are dealing with, yet start to get sick of it
describe stage 3: Exhaustion this stage is when you are so mentally and physically exhausted that you do not respond well to stress at all.
basically Selye is saying that: your response is much higher at the first signs of stress, yet as the stress drags on it wears you out. (DUH)
what is the fight or flight response? the hypothalamus senses the stress, and sends signals to the pituitary and adrenal glands which increases adrenaline as well as causes rapid breathing and heart rate.

5) sense of humor laughing will lower your stress
6) relaxation progressive muscle/imagery tapes... relaxation will give you an escape from all the madness
7) A positive attitude! "losers have to do things, winners choose to do things" - Zig Zigler
sources of stress (4) traumatic events, uncontrollability, lack of predictability, and bottling all of your problems inside all cause stress
reactions to stress (4) anxiety, anger agression, apathy and depression, and cognitive impairment

what is cognitive impairment? when it is hard to concentrate on anything besides that one thing; you are distracted
