TermDefinition
Identification The process by which children incorporate their parents' values into their developing superegos.
Fixation A lingering focus on an earlier psychosexual stage, causing an individual to be stuck in that stage.
Defense Mechanisms The ego's protective methods of reducing anxiety by unconsciously distorting reality.
Repression The basic defense mechanism that banishes anxiety-arousing thoughts, feelings, and memories from consciousness.
Humanistic Theories Theories emphasizing personal growth and fulfillment of individual potential.
Hierarchy of Needs Maslow's pyramid of human needs, starting with basic physiological needs and rising to self-transcendence.
Self-Actualization The process of realizing and fulfilling one's potential and capabilities.
Self-Transcendence The striving for identity, meaning, and purpose beyond the self.
Unconditional Positive Regard An attitude of total acceptance toward another person, promoting a person's feelings of self-worth.
Self-Concept A person's overall self-assessment or sense of self.
Adaptation Level Phenomenon Our tendency to form judgments based on previous experiences and adjust to current circumstances.
Defensive Deprivation A theory suggesting that a lack of positive experiences may lead to aggressive behavior.
Collective Unconscious Carl Jung's concept of a shared, inherited reservoir of memory traces from our species' history.
Terror Management Theory A theory exploring how people react to reminders of their mortality.
Individualism A cultural orientation emphasizing personal goals and autonomy.
Collectivism A cultural orientation emphasizing group goals and interdependence.
Trait A characteristic pattern of behavior or a disposition to feel and act.
Personality Inventory A questionnaire assessing one's personality traits, often used in psychological research.
MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) A widely used personality inventory that identifies emotional disorders.
Empirically Derived Test A test developed by testing a pool of items and selecting those that discriminate between groups.
Self In contemporary psychology, the center of personality, organizing experiences and integrating them into a unified sense of self.
Spotlight Effect The belief that others are paying more attention to our appearance and behavior than they really are.
