ECE3-04 Responses to Challenging Behavior/Guidance

Observation The practice of watching and noticing children's abilities, interactions, and performance of tasks.
Challenging Behaviors Tardiness, Speaking out of turn, refusal to do work or meet deadlines, etc.
Developmentally Appropriate Behavior-school age prefer to spend time with same gender friends, value peer opinions, want to fit in and often imitate peers
Developmentally Appropriate Behavior-pre-teen social anxiety around friends, easily embarrassed, seeking approval from peers, changes in self image
Developmentally Appropriate Behavior-teenager preferring to be alone, valuing privacy, prioritizing time with friends, seeking independence
Causes of challenging behavior Stress, health conditions, learning difficulties or disabilities, family stress, poverty, hunger, etc.
Appropriate discipline Consequences that allow the child to maintain their dignity and self worth.
Appropriate guidance Positively supporting changes in behavior
Relationship (in discipline) Teachers should provide nurturing and encouraging corrections to behaviors
Ability levels (evidenced in behavior) Children who struggle in a particular subject sometimes act out to avoid detection of the short fall.
Risk Factors Poverty, Hunger, Illness, Family changes (i.e. divorce, death), Economic stress, Abuse, Neglect, etc.
