ECE1-11 ECE Learning Environment

TermDefinition
Classroom The space where teaching and learning take place
Outdoor Space The outdoor extension of the classroom where teaching and learning take place
Lighting/View The source or effect of how a room receives light and view through window.
Stationary Equipment Permanent or built in counters & cabinets that can’t be moved.
Cool Colors Peaceful colors such as blue, green & purple; encourage creativity
Warm Colors Stimulating colors such as yellow or orange; help people engage
Traffic Pattern The pathway students and teachers use to move around the room
Sensory Table Table designed to hold water, sand, rice or other tactile materials
Cubby Personal space for each child to keep work and belongings
Custodial Needs Snack or meal, hand washing and toileting needs
Isolation Area Area where students can be away from others if sick or upset
Learning Centers Areas of the room specified for a particular purpose ie. art, dramatic play, math, science, reading, etc.
Spectator Toys Toys or materials that require little or no interaction from the child.
Developmentally Appropriate Furnishings Furniture that is child sized and safe for children to use.
Developmentally Appropriate Materials Toys, games, puzzles and other items that are equal to the child's ability physically, cognitively, and otherwise.
Multicultural Classroom A classroom that purposefully includes representations of a diverse community. (All kinds of people)
Positive Learning Environment Space that is very conducive to learning
Materials Items such as books, technology equipment, etc. that facilitate activities to support learning
Classroom Management system A visual or other tool that helps students regulate their own behavior
Manipulatives Items that allow and encourage fine motor development, such as blocks, links, snap together toys, etc.
