SC- Key concepts

TermDefinition
Acculturation The modification of the culture of a group or individual as a result of contact with a different culture.
Culture Culture is the set of ideas, behaviors, attitudes, and traditions that exist within large groups of people. These ideas, behaviors and traditions are passed on from one generation to the next and are typically resistant to change over time.
Cultural dimensions The effects of a society's culture on the values of its members, and how these values relate to behavior.
Emic approach The study of a culture from within the culture. The goal is gain an understanding of the culture being studied. It is typically an inductive approach to research.
Enculturation The process by which the culture of a particular society is instilled in a human from infancy onward.
Etic approach Cross-cultural research which compares two or more cultures with regard to an established theory. The goal is to test for the universality of a behavior. It is typically a deductive approach to research.
Globalization Globalization is moving away from one's "local culture" and adopting an international - usually Western - culture.
Social learning Process in which individuals observe the behavior of others and its consequences, and modify their own behavior accordingly.
Stereotype A fixed, over-generalized belief about a particular group or class of people.
Stereotype threat When worry about conforming to a negative stereotype leads to under-performance on a test or other task by a member of the stereotyped group
