Term | Definition |
---|---|
The Brain | Complex 3 pound organ at the center of human development. |
Frontal Lobe | Judgement, impulse control, emotions, planning, reasoning, problem solving |
Temporal Lobe | Speech, language, hearing |
Cerebellum | Located at the back of the brain near the brain stem. Responsible for motivation, coordination, and balance. |
Parietal Lobe | processing sensory input |
Occipital Lobe | Visual learning |
Cortex | Covers the brain- higher order thinking and processing. |
Myelin Sheath | An insulating material that forms a layer, usually around only the axon of a neuron. Essential for insulating the axon. |
Limbic System | Emotion and memory part of the brain. -Hypothalamus, thalamus, hippocampus, amygdala |
Cerebrum | Thinking system- all the lobes- Frontal lobe, Temporal lobe, Parietal lobe, Occipital |
Synapses | Tiny gap between axon of one neuron and dendrite of another -they are bridged by neurotransmitters (chemicals that transfer across the synapses from one neuron to the next) |
Brain stem | controls the flow of messages between the brain and the rest of the body, and it also controls basic body functions such as breathing, swallowing, heart rate, blood pressure, consciousness, and whether one is awake or sleepy. |
Dendrites | Receive information from another neuron. |
Axon | Long part of neuron that allows impulse to travel through. |
Cell body | Store impulse information in neuron (soma). |
Thinking system | Cerebrum- lobes |
Automatic Body Function System | Cerebellum and brain stem |
