Facts about the heart

TermDefinition
Heart The heart is a strong muscle about the size of your fist. It pumps blood through blood vessels around the body and sits inside the chest, protected by the ribcage. The blood carries oxygen and other nutrients your body
Circulatory/Cardiovascular System The cardiovascular system is composed of the heart and blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and capillaries.
Circulation (say: ser-kyuh-LAY-shun) The movement of the blood through the heart and around the body is called circulation.
Cholesterol Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance it can be found in high fat foods.
Pulse Your beating heart creates a pulse. The most common places to feel a pulse are on your wrist and your neck.
Red Blood Cells Red blood cells have the important job of carrying oxygen.
Aorta the main artery of the body, supplying oxygenated blood to the circulatory system. In humans it passes over the heart from the left ventricle and runs down in front of the backbone.
Cholesterol A type of fat found in your blood. Meat, fish, eggs, butter, cheese, and milk all have cholesterol in them. Fruits, vegetables, and grains (like oatmeal) don't have any cholesterol.
