IBPsych Study Review

This stack goes through different studies that you should know for your IB Psych

QuestionAnswer
What was the AIM of Draganski's study? To study if the brain can change structure in response to environmental demands
What was the METHOD of Draganski's study? Random sampling experiment
What was the PROCEDURE of Draganski's study? He made a group of non-jugglers and jugglers. He took a brain scan of everyone beforehand, then had the jugglers learn how to juggle for 3 months. Then he scanned them again, told them to stop juggling, then scanned them again 3 months later.
Why did Draganski perform a brain scan after 3 months of no activity? In order to see if the juggling had changed their brain structure in any way.
What were the RESULTS of Draganski's brain scans? Draganski found that the juggling group had significantly more grey matter in their mid-temporal area than the control group, even when it shrunk
What was the CONCLUSION of Draganski's study? That learning a new skill leads to an increase in gray matter in the brain.
What was the AIM of the Maguire study? To study the relationship between the size of the hippocampus and spacial ability
What was the METHOD of the Maguire study? Quasi-experiment(people aren't randomly assigned to groups, so it can't prove cause and effect)
What was the PROCEDURE of the Maguire study? 16 healthy right-handed male London taxi drivers were given MRIs. Those scans were compared to scans of 50 healthy people in other professions.
What were the RESULTS of the Maguire study? London taxi drivers had similar hippocampus size compared to control groups. However, the control group's front of the brain was larger, and the taxi drivers had a larger back of the brain.
Why is there NO CONCLUSION in the Maguire study? There is no conclusion in the Maguire study because it is a quasi experiment, therefore you can't prove a definite cause.
