What is CRITICAL THINKING? Apply logic rules, gather evidence, evaluate, and creating a plan of action. Everyday skills to be intellectually and personally developed.
What is LOGIC? The study of methods and principles to distinguish between correct and poor arguments.
What is an OPINION? A belief based on one's personal feelings.
What is METHOD OF DOUBT? (Descartes) Critical analysis, be skeptical. Put aside preconceived ideas, beliefs.
What are characteristics of a good critical thinker? analytical skills, effective communication, research and inquiry, flexibility and tolerance for ambiguity, open-minded skepticism, creative problem-solving, attention, mindfulness, curiosity, collaborative learning
What is METHOD OF BELIEF? Critical analysis method, suspend doubts and biases, be open to listening to opposing views.
What is cognitive development? It is process of how humans become more intelligent problem-solvers from infancy to adulthood.
What is DUALISM? It is Stage 1 in Cognitive Development. There are two choices such as RIGHT or WRONG. Young students tend to view knowledge as outside selves. Only authority figures have answers.
What is CONFIRMATION BIAS? It is when students only find evidence to support their own preexisting views.
What is RELATIVISM? It is Stage 2 in Cognitive Development. It is when authorities do not have the correct answers. There are no right or wrong answers since everyone's opinion is valid.
What is COMMITMENT? It is Stage 3 in Cognitive Development. It is when you make a decision or commitment using evidence.
What is a self-examined life? A life you examine by creating a rational life plan (John Rawls) with values, interests, skills, and talents.
What is DEMOCRACY? It is a form of government run by the people and for the people. Promotes Freedom of Speech and listening to opposing views.
What is the purpose of democracy? To promote discussion and debates by diverse views. Thomas Jefferson.
What is the Three-Tier Model of Thinking? Experience (base tier) is what we interpret (2nd tier) and then analyze (3rd tier)
What is RESISTANCE? It is resistance to having our views challenged. Avoidance, anger, cliches, denial, ignorance, conformity, struggling, distractions.
What is NARROW-MINDEDNESS? Barriers to critical thinking. ABSOLUTISM, EGOCENTRISM, ETHNOCENTRISM, ANTHROPOCENTRISM, FEAR OF CHALLENGE
What is RATIONALIZATION? Justifying past bad actions as reasonable good actions.
What is DOUBLETHINK? It is having two contradictory viewpoints. You say one thing, but you do another.
What is COGNITIVE DISSONANCE? It is when new ideas conflict directly with our own worldviews.
What is SOCIAL DISSONANCE? It is when new social behavior conflicts with our own worldviews.
