Psycology as a Science

TermDefinition
Motivation Internal processes that activate, guide and maintain behavior over time What drives us to behave in certain ways Is a process that influences the direction, persistence and vigor of goal-directed behavior
Instinct Theory Innate tendencies (cause us to behave certain ways)
Drive Theory Biological needs create drive that ''pushes'' behavior to reduce drive (homeostasis)
Expectancy Theory Behavior is ''pulled'' be expectations of rewards/incentives
Homeostasis A state of internal physiological equilibrium that the body strives to maintain
Self-determination Theory Competence, Autonomy and Relatedness
Competence When we feel competent, we feel capable; reflects a human need to master new challenges and perfect skills
Autonomy We make decisions for ourselves; self determination, is satisfied when people experience their actions as a result of free choice without outside interference
Relatedness Our desire for a meaningful bond with others
Stomach Pangs (hungry) / Distention (full) Basic motivation. Signals to feel hunger and to stop eating.
Glucose Levels Drop and rise glucose levels alerts the body when you are hungry
Peptides (CCK/Ghrelin) CCK is released when food arrives in the intestine. Animals given CCK stop eating or eat less. Ghrelin increases levels of hunger. CCK decreases levels of hunger.
Hormones (Leptin) Gain fat -> secrete more leptin -> eat less because we feel full sooner (“plenty of fat tissue, it’s time to eat less” Lose fat -> less leptin -> eat more to feel full
Cognitive Factors of Eating Disorders Maladaptive beliefs (control is a dominant theme) Distorted body perceptions (they do not see themselves as others do, they see themselves as fat, ugly or unwanted)
Anorexia Perfectionist, high achievers, parents often set high goals Starves themselves Weighs less than 85% of what is expected for age/height Report feeling fat, even when very thin Obsessive, need for control
Bulimia Depressed and anxious Impulsive, overly sensitive, low self-esteem Diet-binge-purge disorder Vomits, misuses laxatives, exercises, or fasts to get of calories Weight either normal or close to it
