Communication Interaction Family Therapy

Assumption of Communication Family Therapy All behavior can be viewed as communication, but the rules of human interaction are not always intelligible to the person receiving the message in the way they were intended by the person sending the message.
Goal of Communication Family Therapy The focus of therapy should not be the individual psyche of the client but rather the interactional patterns of behavior between family members.
Since all behavior is communicative People are always communicating, even when they are doing nothing.
Define Report Function and Command Function Report – the content aspect of communication. Command is often nonverbal and makes a statement about the relationship between communicators. Problems arise when report and command are contradictory.
What is the purpose of Family Rules? These govern all family interactions. Rules may not be explicitly defined, but exist in order to maintain family homeostasis.
How are communication patterns either symmetrical or complementary? In complementary relationships, one person is superior while the other person is inferior or submissive. In symmetrical relationships there is equality between partners; however, messages can escalate to charged, competitive interactions.
Define the principle of Equifinality No matter where in the change in the system occurs, the result will always be the same. There are many different ways to get to the same destination.
In regard to maladaptive behavior, Communication Theorists ascribe to Circular Causality, which states that a symptom is Both a cause and effect of dysfunctional communication patterns.
*Examples of dysfunctional communication relating to Circular Causality are Blaming and criticizing, mindreading, making incomplete statements, making statements which imply that events are unalterable, overgeneralizing.
Direct Techniques of Communication Therapy 1) Pointing out problematic interaction patterns and redefining (pointing out what family a member meant). 2) Teaching family members rules of clear communication (talking to rather than about others, using I statements).
Indirect Techniques of Communication therapy include paradoxical strategies such as Prescribing the Symptom and Relabeling. Define both Prescribing the Symptom is instructing the family to continue to engage in its dysfunctional behavior. Relabeling is changing the label attached to a problem by the family to change its meaning.
