Problems/Effects with Experiments and Solutions

Carry-Over Effects occurs when effects of one treatment persist when another treatment is introduced
Sensitization Effects when subject becomes aware of manipulation in the study which causes changes in behavior
Practice Effects occur when subjects performance with the experimental task changes either for better or worse as a result of experience w/ the task
Demand Characteristics aspects of a study that indicate to subjects how they are expected to respond
Hawthorne Effect demand characteristic that happens when subjects change their behavior because they know they are being observed
Placebo Effect a demand characteristic that happens when people change their behavior as a result of their expectation that change should occur
Rosenthal Effect a demand characteristic that happens when subjects change their behavior due to unintentional cues from the researcher
Novelty Effect NOT a demand characteristic; happens when the IV affects the DV only because the IV is something new
Range Restriction occurs when there is a floor or ceiling effect on one of the variables in a correlation
Regression to the Mean tendency for extreme values of variable to fall closer to group mean retested
Methods of Counterbalancing method of assigning subjects to treatment orders so that across subjects, practice effects are even (use all possible treatment orders, use a latin square)
Single-Blind Experiment experiment in which the subject does not know which IV level they received (overcomes Placebo)
Double-Blind Experiment experiment in which neither the subject, nor anyone having contact w/ the subject, knows which IV level the subject receives (overcomes Placebo and Rosenthal)
