Cortical Localization Particular areas of the human brain are associated with particular functions
Pierre Paul Broca "Lower left frontal lobe" of the cerebral cortex, when damaged creates difficulties in speaking but no loss of Comprehension. Broca's Area
Karl Wernicke "Left Temporal Lobe", When damaged, produces meaningless or nonsensical speech and difficulties in verbal and written comprehension. Wernicke's Area
Lateralization of Function One hemisphere exerts more control over the processing of one particular psychological function.
Aphasia Partial or complete inability to articulate ideas or understand spoken or written language due to brain injury or damage.
Wernicke's Aphasia Can speak, have trouble finding the correct words.
Split-Brain Operation Surgical procedure that involves cutting the corpus callous in order to stop or reduce seizures.
Roger Sperry pioneered research on hemispheric specialization using split-brain patients
Sperry Experiment verbally-identify nonverbally-the subject was able to pick up the correct object with his left hand
Sperry Experiment Reconfirmed specialized language abilities of the left hemisphere
Left Hemisphere Superior in language abilities, speech, reading and writing.
Right Hemisphere nonverbal emotional expression and visual-spatial tasks. Recognizing faces, emotional facial cues, reading maps, copying designs, and drawing; music.
Men Brains Larger Brain, more white matter and more cerebrospinal fluid
Female Brains Higher percent of grey matter, more white matter in the corpus callous, and display more cortical complexity.
