being Developmental process where by the individual seeks to realize his or her unique set of potentials.
Dasein Indicates that a person exists in a particular place at a particular time. Thus, the indiv. can be conscious of, and responsible for, his or her existence, and can therefore choose the direction his or her life will take. German sein (being) da (there)
eigenwelt The unique presence in human beings of self-awareness and self-relatedness.
existential-analytic perspective Theoretical approach to understanding personality that combines elements of existential philosophy with Freudian concepts. Focus on how we cope w/ anxieties from the inability to love others & the inevitability of death.
existentialism Philosophy that focuses on people's attempts to make sense of their existence by assigning meaning to it and then taking responsibility for their own actions as they try to live in accordance w/ their chosen values and principles.
healthy communal orientation A view that other people should be treated with dignity and respect and helped when they are in need.
healthy individualism A set of personal characteristics that fosters the ability to initiate action by confronting problems constructively without hurting others.
mitwelt The world of interrelationships. The experiences and meanings we share with others through our relationships.
neurotic anxiety Painful feeling that is produced by an excessive reaction to a threat to our values. It involves a failure to make a choice that could lead to further growth.
normal anxiety Painful feeling that emanates from a realistic threat to our established values. It is healthy to confront this threat, by making choices that lead to further growth.
ontology Branch of philosophy that seeks to understand the nature of being.
unhealthy communal orientation The view that others should be used to further one's own ends and to satisfy only one's personal goals.
unhealthy individualism A set of personal characteristics that drives people to see themselves as separate from others, that is, to believe that they are superior to others and must exercise control over them.
umwelt The biological or natural environment in which human beings exist. A world of biological needs and drives, it consists of natural cycles of sleep and waking, of being born and dying, of desire and relief.
