Who is the Family?

Family Forms

TermDefinition
Nuclear Family Consists of a mother, father, and one or more children born to them
Single-parent Family One parent raising one or more children
Blended Family Formed when two people marry and at least one already has children
Extended Family Another relative, such as a grandparent or aunt, lives with the family
Adoptive Family Parents legally adopt a child not born to them
Foster Family Includes a child not related to the family but cared for by them as a famiy member
Basic Needs Food, shelter, clothing, and education
Emotional Support Help in difficult times and with building self confidence
Values Teaching right from wrong and what is important in life
Socialization Children learn how to get along with others, how to act in different situations and about their heritage and culture.
