ECE2-09 Child Abuse and Neglect

TermDefinition
Abuse To treat a person with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly
Neglect Failure of parents or caregivers to meet the needs of a child or refusal to meet the needs of a child's needs in any area, physical, emotional, etc.
Mandated Reporter Many professionals who work with children are REQUIRED BY LAW to report any suspected abuse or neglect of children
Signs of Abuse or Neglect Regressive behavior, outbursts and unpredictability, withdrawal, fear of adults, destructive behavior, excessive clinging or crying...
Verbal Abuse Using loud or harsh words to demean or punish a child.
Emotional Abuse Hurting a child's self-concept through words or actions. Refusal to show approval, affection, or support.
Physical Abuse Hitting, kicking, burning, or otherwise inflicting pain or injury on a child.
Sexual Abuse Forcing a child to observe or engage in sexual activities with an adult. Adults using children for their own pleasure. Incest is sexual abuse by a family member.
Non-accidental Physical injury Intentionally hurting a child to punish or attempt to change behavior.
The Department of Family and Children Services The government organization that attempts to track and investigate suspected abuse or neglect
Social Worker A professional who investigate cases of abuse and neglect and attempts to help children and families who need support
Children's Shelter A place where abused or neglected children can live temporarily when abuse or neglect is being investigated.
Foster care A government system that attempts to provide temporary care to children whose parents are not currently able or willing to care for them.
Homelessness A person not having a regular, stable place to live and or sleep.
Children's Advocate A professional, often an attorney who represents a child and considers their best interest. Often important in placement or custody situations.
