Elements and Principals of Design

What are the elements of design? Line, Shape/Form, Texture, Color, and Space
What are the principles of design? Balance, Rhythm, Proportion, Emphasis, Harmony
What is the principle repetition? Rhythm
How does texture affect color? Course Texture- absorbs light, darker color
What do curved lines suggest? It feels natural, comfortable, casual
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? Horizontal- when the left and right are balanced Vertical- when the top and bottom are balanced Radial- when there is balance all around a central point (ex. sun rays, tire)
What do diagonal lines suggest? Movement
What is space? How the room is laid out and feels (ex. roomy, natural light, high/low ceilings)
What are the four types of rhythm? Regular, Graduated, Random, Gradiation
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? When the object is not exactly the same, but it appears to be equal
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? Horizontal- goes left and right Vertical- goes up and down
What is the golden mean? 3 to 5
What is the difference between shape and form? Shape- 2D (two dimensional/flat) Form- 3D (three dimensional)
What are the five types of balance? Radial- sun rays, tire Vertical- top & bottom Horizontal- left & right Symmetrical- Formal Asymmetrical- Informal
What does unity or harmony mean? When all elements and principals work in a room, and it doesn't look crowded
What are the two things texture involves? How it feels or how it looks like it might feel
What are the four types of line? Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal, Curved
What is proportion? The way in which parts relate to the design as a whole
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Asymmetrical
What is symmetrical balance? Example? Formal, when both sides are exactly the same (ex. butterfly, flower)
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? Focal Point, the most important visual element of a design and it dominates over the other elements
What happens when you use a continuous line? The eye follows the line all around the room
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation- when a deign is repeated but one element changes gradually (shape, color, size) Radiation- when the eye starts in the center of the design and is drawn out
