What are the three chemical senses? 1. Olfaction/smell. 2. Gustatory/taste. 3. Chemisthesis/common chemical sense
What are the stimuli for olfaction? Volatile chemicals
What are the sensory receptors for olfaction? olfactory sensory neurons - they are REAL neurons!
Describe the olfactory sensory neurons Has about a 6-8 week lifespan. Receptor cells and g-protein coupled receptors located on cilia. axons run through the porous passage called the Cribiform plate, down the olfactory tract, and into the brain.
What is anosnia? Loss of smell
What is Aguesia? Loss of taste due to damage of three nerves
Where does the retronasal pathway run? Through the back of the throat
Who received the 2004 Nobel prize for work on the sense of smell? Linda B. Buck and Richard Axel
Where are the two places neuronal regeneration occurs? The hippocampus & the olfactory system.
What is the Olfactory bulb glomeruli? Is small bulbs called glomeruli encompassing the synapses for axons that passed through the cribiform plate.
describe the pathway for odorant molecule-odorant receptor binding. ~Odorant molecule binds to receptor protein. ~receptor-odorant complex activates G protein that combines w/ GTP, displacing GDP. ~G protein dissociates activating cAMP. cAMP binds a Na+ channel opening it & creating generator potential.
