chapter 6 vocabulary

TermDefinition
trimester A three-month period. Pregnancy consists of three trimesters.
conception The union of a sperm and egg cell. Conception is the beginning of pregnancy.
zygote Single-celled organism that is formed when the separate nuclei of sperm and egg combine into on nucleus.
prenatal development All the development that occurs between conception and birth.
blastocyst A hollow ball of cells that implants itself in the uterus; name for a developing baby from after the zygote stage until the embryo stage.
placenta A special organ formed during pregancy that functions as the interchange between the developing baby and its mother.
umbilical cord A flexible cord that contains blood vessels and connects the planenta to the developing baby.
amniotic fluid fluid inside the amnniochorionic membrane that regulate the baby's temperature, cushions the baby against injury, and allows the baby to move around easily.
embryo Name for the developing baby from the second to the eighth weeks of pregnancy.
fetus The name for a developing baby from the ninth week of pregnancy until birth.
miscarriage The natural ending of a pregnancy before the fifth month; spontaneous abortion.
stillbirth Th natural ending of a pregnancy after the fifth mont; spontaneous abortion.
pregnancy-induced hypertension(PIH) A complication of pregnancy that affects a woman's kidneys, heart,or blood circulation.
rubella A virus that can complicate pregnancy,causing miscarriage, stillbith,or congenital disorders.
Rh factor disorder A disorder that can complicate pregnancy.
sexually transmitted diseases(STDs) A number of infections and conditions that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact.
AIDS(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) A disease that breaks down immune system leaving the body vulnerable to diseases that a healthy body could easily resist.
HIV(human immunodeficiency virus) A virus that causes the disease AIDS. HIV is often transmitted sexually; has no cure.
