Why are beliefs about our illness important? Because we often interact with people who are ill and because we most likely become il during our lifetime.
What is this disorder? "The production of recurrent and multiple medical symptoms without organice cause" Somatization Disorder
Read over the criteria for Somatization Disorder :)
What age does the disorder onset before? 30 years old
The common sense mode can be applied to beliefs about s___________ conditions, mental health conditions, diagnosed physical conditions and p___________ physical conditions somatization, potential
Look up the common sense model on internet and figure it out more :)
What is Lupus? Any of various ulcerous skin diseases
Lupus affects mostly women or men? Women
Look up the Hale et al (2005) research paper and the Goodman et al (2005) research paper. compare them and their findings. :)
What do patients causal perceptions of Lupus focus on? Stress, Hereditary, Pregnancy, Viral infections, Medications or chemicals or a combination o the above.
Lupus can be perceived differently by the public who see it as a d________ or something con________ disease, contagious
The consequences of an illness is the impact on the individual in terms of what two things? and the impact on those close to them. Work ability and income, daily chores and values activities
But basically the impact of an illness depends on life stage, r_______ and e______________ roles, expectations
There are also specific consequences for Lupus. Read over them and write them out :)
Lupus patients still feel that they have some degree of c_________. And they also have some degree of ________ in terms of genetic research into causes and medications to treat these genetic causes control, hope

HIV is a what type of virus? Retrovirus
What elements of life are affected in the lady in the videos life? Has to take lots of drugs, Lost weight, Doesn't tell her children because she doesn't want them to be in the dark
Treharne did a study asking "what is the effect of __________ with causal information? priming
Treharne had three hypotheses. What were they? People think that personal behaviours more import. for causing HIV/AIDS then RA, Presenting people with info about external factors or behaviours that cause HIV/AID or RA will prime them to agree more with these cases, Primingeffect willbe stronger for RA
In Treharnes study what two illnesses did he look into? HIV/AIDS and RA
What were the three experimental conditions of Treharnes study? 1. Only the name primed, 2. Short information emphasizing personal behaviours as cause and highlighting the serious nature, 3. Short information emphasizing external factors as cause and downplaying the consequences
What did Treharne use as a measure in his study. And with this he measured the....? The Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire to measure causes (patients behaviour versus germ/virus), consequences and emotional impact.
Read over the results. :)
Read the research paper of Treharnes study and then right out conclusions :)
What did McGavock and Treharne (2011) then want to find out? What do people think about when completing the IPQ-R?
So they asked participants to "t________ a________" while they completed the IPQ-R. think aloud
They then analysed this and found that there were four themes from what participants thought about. What were they? Then read them and right them out Illness characteristics, Sources of information, Other peoples knowledge and difficulties with the task and Difficulties with the task
