Otitis Media | Inflammation of the middle ear, occuring between tympanic membrane and inner ear. |
Kaposi's Sarcoma | Cancerous tumor of the connective tissue. Often associated with AIDS and found in cells lining the lymph/blood vessels. |
Apthous Ulcers | Canker sore, mouth ulcer. |
Macular degeneration | Loss of vision in the center of the visual field becaues of damage to the retina. |
Strabuismus | Condition where eyes are not properly aligned with each other. |
Scotomata | Diminished vision/blurred vision. |
Amaurosis | Vision loss not due to a lesion. |
Entropion | In-turned lid margin. |
Ectropion | Out-turned lid margin. |
Ptosis | Drooping/falling of the upper/lower eyelid. |
Hordeolum | Eyelid bump, a.k.a. stye. Sebaceous gland infection. |
Conjunctivitis | Swelling or infection of the membrane lining the eyelids (pink eye/madras eye). |
Pterygium | Surfer's eye. Non-cancerous growth of the clear thin tissue (conjunctiva) that lays over the white part of the eye. May be reduced with lowered sun exposure or surgery. |
Subconjunctival hemorrhage | Bright red patch appearing in the white of the eye. |
Aqueous humor | Clear gel that fills the space between the cornea and lens of the eyeball (Anterior space). |
Vitreous humor | Clear gel that fills the space between the lens and retina of the eyeball (Posterior space). |
Anisocoria | Condition of unequal size in pupils. |
Phoria | Potential eyeturn; occurs during period of suspended sensory fusion of the eyes. Returns to normal when obstacle to fusion is removed. |
Tropia | Eye that deviates; constant or intermittent; sensory fusion is unable to maintain the eyes in a straight position. |
Nystagmus | Involuntary movement of eyes horizontally, vertically, or in a rotary fashion. |
Lid lag | Immobility or lagging of the upper eyelid on downward rotation of the eye. |
Red reflex | Appearance of red-eye in pictures as light enters through the pupil and reflects off the fundus on the posterior surface of the eyeball. |
Retinoblastoma | Rare eye cancer. |
Otalgia | Earache. |
Otorrhea | Discharge from ear. |
Weber test | Hearing test involving tuning fork being placed on vertex of forehead. Patient reports which ear hears better if not equal. Tuning fork will be heard better in the affected ear. |
Rinne test | Two fold hearing test involving bone conduction(BC) and air conduction(AC) with a tuning fork. Patient reports when sound of tuning fork ceases. AC=2x > BC or hearing problem is plausible. |
Whisper test | Hearing test involving 3 letters and numbers being whispered to a tested ear from a distance of 1-2 feet. Patient repeats back alphanumerical combination to verify auditory ability. |
What color should the tympanic membrane of the ear be? | Pearl color. |
Cerumen | Ear wax. |
Tympanostomy tube | Small tube inserted to the ear drum in order to prevent the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear. |
Rhinorrhea | Condition of the nasal cavity being filled with a great deal of mucous fluid. |
Buccal mucosa | Mucous membrane/epithelium of the mouth. Oral mucosa. |
Candida | Fungal infection of the throat |
