Question | Answer |
Where do most cranial nerves arise from? Where do CN I and II arise from? | brainstem, cerebrum |
Which nerve goes to areas of the body besides the head and neck | Vagus |
Which nerves are relevant to dentistry? | V, VII, IX, X, XII |
Define Nerve | bundle of fibers made up of several neurons |
Define nucleus as it relates to nerves | collection of nerve cell bodies in the CNS |
Define ganglion | collection of nerve cell bodies outside the CNS |
What is CN I responsible for? | Sense of smell |
What are CN II, III, IV, and VI responsible for? | eye movement and vision (only CN II) |
What is CN VIII responsible for? | hearing and equilibrium |
What does CN IX innervate? | stylopharyngeus muscle (motor), posterior 1/3 of tongue for taste and sensation (spec. sense), mucous membranes of the pharynx for sensation of swallowing (sensory), BP control of carotid artery at carotid sinus (sensory), parotid gland for secretion |
What does CN X innervate? | thoraci & abdominal viscera (organs) inc. heart, lungs, stomach, spleen (sens.&motor), palatoglossus m. (motor), epiglottis region of tongue for taste & senssation (spec.sensory), skin around ear (sensory), muscles of soft palate, larynx,& pharynx (motor) |
What are the two parts of CN IX and what do they innervate? | Spinal part: innervates sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles (motor); cranial part: innervates muscle of larynx (motor) |
What does the hypoglossal innervate? | All intrinsic muscles of the tongue (motor); 3 external muscles of tongue: hyoglossus, genioglossus, and styloglossus |
What are the differences b/w parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions? | Parasympathetic: Used in everyday life sustaining functions (slows HR, inc. salivary fx), ganglia are close to organs they innervate; sympathetic: responsible for fight or flight response (inc. HR, dec. salivary fxn), ganglia are closer to spinal cord |
What are the 2 branches involved in autonomic motor control and their associated ganglia? | Greater petrosal branch: Pterygopalatine ganglion Chorda tympani branch: Submandibular ganglion |
