Weathering | The process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earth's S |
Erosion | The movement of rock particles by water, ice or wind. |
Mechanical Weathering | Process that physically breaks rock into small pieces. |
Abrasion | The grinding away of rock by rock particles carried by wind, ice, water or gravity. |
Ice Wedging | Water ice widens and deepens cracks in rocks eventually splitting rock. |
Chemical Weatering | Rock is broken down by chemical changes, water, acid, CO, ect. |
Permeable | Water can eaisly penetrate some rocks because of tiny air spaces. |
Rates of Weathering | A type of rock (Permaeble or not) and climate (hot & wet, or Cold & dry for example) |
Soil | Loose weathered material on the Earths surface that plants groww in. |
Bedrock | Solid layer of rock beneath the Earths surface. |
Humus | Rich fertile dark colored material that forms as plant and animal remains decay. |
Loam | Soil that is about equal parts of clay, sand and slit. |
Topsoil (Horizon A) | A crumbly dark brown soil that is a mixture of humus, caly, and other minerals.. |
Subsoil (Horizon B) | Clay and other particals washed down from horizion A, but little humus. |
Litter | A loose layer normally of leaves on the surface. |
Decomposer | Organisms that breakdown the remains of dead organisms and digest them with chemicals, bacteria, fungi, and worms. |
