Immunity | the body’s ability to resist a disease |
Antigen | any foreign object such as dust, bacteria, or virus that enters the body |
Antibody | proteins in the blood or on cell membranes that help identify and destroy antigens |
Macrophage | large cells that seek out, engulf and destroy cells. |
Agglutinate | the clumping and destruction of antigens by the immune system |
Allergy | a rapid overreaction to an antigen that is not normally harmful. |
Active Immunity | the body produces its own antibodies to attack a particular antigen |
Passive Immunity | the body is given antibodies to attack a particular antigen, e.g. fetal immunity |
Lymphocytes | the cells of the immune system including T-Cells, B-cells, and macrophages. |
B Cells | made in the bone marrow, make antibodies |
T Cells | made in the thymus, have the ability to kill pathogens |
Pathogen | any disease carrying organism like a bacteria, virus, or parasite |
Antibiotics | a class of drugs used to fight bacterial infections |
Virus | a small, parasitic pathogen that causes disease |
Toxin | a poisonous chemical produced by a pathogen |
Autoimmune disease | the immune system attacks cells in its own body |
Diabetes Mellitus | an autoimmune disease where sugar is not taken out of the blood |
Multiple Sclerosis | an autoimmune disease that attacks the nervous system |
Rheumatoid Arthritis | an autoimmune disease that attacks the joints |
HIV | the virus that causes AIDS |
AIDS | a viral infection that leads to other infections and eventual death |
