What are some things that can cause a seizure? | Fever, epilepsy, stroke, measles, hypoglycemia, eclampsia, hypoxia, heat stroke, infection etc. |
What is a Partial Seizure? | A tingling, stiffening, or jerking in just one part of the body. |
What order do seizures usually follow? | Tonic, clonic and then postictal. |
What happens during a tonic phase? | The body becomes rigid, stiffening for no more than 30 seconds. Breathing may stop. Bowel and bladder control may be lost. |
What happens during a clonic phase? | The body jerks violently, usually for no more than 1 or 2 minutes. Foaming at the mouth or drool. Face and lips may become cyanotic. |
What happens during a postictal phase? | State of drowsiness and confusion. May remain unconsicious. Headache is common. |
What is an absence seizure(petit mal)? | Bief usually only 1 to 10 seconds. Temporary loos of concentration or awareness. |
The term stroke refers to what? | Death or injury of brain tissue that is deprived of oxygen. |
Define ischemic stroke. | When a clot or embolism occludes an artery. |
Define Hemorrhagic stroke. | Happens when there is bleeding into the brain. Can be the result of longstanding high blood pressure. |
Define aphasia. | difficulty in communication. Patient understands what you're saying, but uses the wrong words to answer. |
Define receptive aphasia. | Patient does not understand what you are saying. Says things that do not make sense. |
What effects does epinephrine have on the body? | It will constrict blood vessels and dilate the bronchioles. |
What are the side effects of epinephrine? | Increased heart rate, pallor, dizziness, chest pain, headache, nausea, anxiety. |
