| Scientific Method | A process we can use to solve problems and answer questions | |
| Question | The question you are trying to answer | The 1st step of the scientific method |
| Information | Gather background information about your question using credible sources of information | The 2nd step of the scientific method |
| Hypothesis | An If... Then... statement scientists use to find a testable way to answer a question | The 3rd step of the scientific method |
| Test | Do an experiment that helps you answer your question | The 4th step of the scientific method |
| Analysis | Scientists look at the data from their experiment and find patterns | The 5th step of the scientific method |
| Conclude and Communicate | After looking at the data, scientists try to answer their original question | The 6th step of the scientific method |
| If... | The part of the hypothesis that explains what the scientist plans to do. | |
| Then... | The part of the hypothesis that explains what results the scientist expects to see. | |
| Independent Variable | The variable a scientist is changing in an experiment. There can only be one of these in an experiment. | Also called the manipulated variable |
| Dependent Variable | The variable that is a result from what changed during the experiment. The scientist measures this variable as the result. | Also called the responding variable |
| Constant Variable | Different things that COULD change in an experiment, but the scientist makes sure they stay the same | |
| Placebo Effect | Animals and humans see real changes in their bodies because they EXPECT there to be a change. | |
| Control Group | What the scientist compares the result to. This group has no change in the independent variable. | |
| Procedure | A step by step set of directions that the scientist follows during an experiment. | |
| Sample Size | Experiments with lots of people or trials have more accurate results. | |
