| Term | Definition |
| Cells | The most basic building block of living things. Made up of organelles. |
| Tissue | A group of cells that work together to perform a similar function. |
| Organs | A group of tissue that works together to perform a similar function. |
| Organ systems | A group of organs that work together to perform a similar function. There are 11 in the human body. |
| Organism | A living thing. Multicellular organisms can be made up of several organ systems. |
| Organelles -> Cells -> Tissues -> Organs -> Organ systems -> Organisms | The levels of organization from small to large. |
| Skeletal system | Protects internal organs. Provides the body with support, shape, and structure. Allows for movement. Produces blood cells. |
| Muscular system | Allows for movement by contracting muscles. Helps regulate body temperature through shivering. |
| Integumentary system | Covers the body in a protective layer of skin, hair, and nails. Helps regulate body temperature and hydration. |
| Endocrine system | Creates chemicals called hormones that regulate MANY things in the human body. |
| Regulate | To control something. Hormones control the body to allow for homeostasis. |
| Hormone | A chemical produced by the endocrine system that helps regulate conditions in the human body. |
| Immune system | Protects the body from foreign pathogens. Helps repair injuries or illnesses. |
| Respiratory system | Brings O2 (oxygen) into the body. Removes CO2 (carbon dioxide) from the body. |
| Circulatory / Cardiovascular system | Transports nutrients, oxygen, hormones, waste, and other materials from one location in the body to another through the bloodstream |
| Excretory / Urinary system | Removes liquid waste from the body through the bladder. Regulates the levels of H2O (water) in the body |
| Reproductive system | Creates gametes (sperm and eggs) and sex hormones. Allows for sexual reproduction. Allows for the growth and development of a baby through pregnancy (female only). |
| Digestive system | Brings food and water into the body. Breaks down food into smaller molecules. Absorbs nutrients from food. Absorbs water. Removes any unused food as solid waste from the body. |
| Nervous system | Receives incoming information (stimulus) through sensory organs. Sends messages from the brain to the body (response). |
