| biotic factor | the living (or used to be living) parts of an environment or habitat - animals & plants |
| abiotic factor | the nonliving parts of an environment or habitat - water & rocks |
| biome | a large ecological region where climate and soil determine the plants and animals that live there |
| microhabitat | a very small habitat - a clump of grass, a rain puddle, under a log |
| habitat | the place where an organism lives |
| biodiversity | the variety of life - the number and variety of living organisms in an ecosystem or biome - more variety means greater sustainability |
| ecosystem | a smaller area within a biome, where the living and nonliving things interact with each other |
| sustainability (sustain, sustainable) | the ability of an ecosystem to maintain itself during stressful times - disease, tornadoes, floods, fire, pollution |
| limiting factor | an environmental factor that keeps or limits a population at a certain size - available food |
| population | a group of the same species that live in the same area, and compete for the same resources - deer, squirrels, hawks |
| adaptation | an inherited trait that improves survival and reproduction success - thick fur |
| genetic diversity | the differences in genetic traits among a species - jaw size in large predatory cats |
| predator | an animal that naturally preys on or hunts other animals |
| prey | an animal that is hunted by another animal |
| niche | what the organism does in its habitat -a specific role - its job |
| ecology | the study of how living and nonliving things in an environment interact with each other |
| competition | the struggle between living things for limited resouces |
| interaction | when two or more organism react to each other |
| threatened species | close to being in danger of dying out |
| equilibrium | a state of balance in an ecosystem |
| interdependence | the survival of a species is dependent on other living organisms and the nonliving parts of the environment |
| consumers | an organim that gets energy from eating other organisms |
| producer | an organism that uses sunlight to make its own food for energy |

| basic needs | The things an organism needs to survive and thrive in their habitat - Air, water, shelter, and food for animals, AND for plants - air, water, light, space, and nutrients. |
| environment | the surroundings or conditions in which an organism lives |
| climate | the weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
| species | a group of animals, plants or other living things that all share common characteristics, that can exchange DNA |
| genetic variation | the genetic differences between individuals - like eye or hair color |
| organism | a living thing that has an organized structure |
| BIO | the prefix that means LIVING or LIFE |
| MICRO | the prefix that means extremely small, and not visible with the eye |
| basic needs | the things an organism needs to survive and thrive in their habitat |
| interaction | when two or more organisms react to each other |
| biosphere | the part of the earth in which life exists, including land, air and water |
| community | all of the populations of different species that live in the same area and interact with one another |
