| organism | one, individual living thing |
| population | all of one species living in an area |
| community | all the living things in an area |
| ecosystem | all the biotic and abiotic things in an area with a unique climate |
| biosphere | Earth; the sum of all ecosystems on the planet |
| biotic | living, or once living |
| abiotic | non-living, or never living |
| producer | an organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis. A plant |
| consumer | an organism that must eat to survive. It cannot photosynthesize its own food. |
| autotroph | an organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis: a plant |
| herbivore | an organism that eats plants only, e.g. cows, horses |
| carnivore | an organism that eats meat only, e.g. cats, dogs, wolves |
| omnivore | an organism that eats both plants and meat, e.g. humans, bears |
| detrivore | an organism that feeds off dead organisms and helps to break materials down, e.g. bacteria, worms |
| food chain | the flow of energy from the sun--> plants--> consumers-->apex predator |
