Term | Definition |
Nutrition | The process of taking food into the body and absorbing the nutrients for health and growth. |
Nutrients | A substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life. |
Carbohydrates | Organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues such as sugars, starches and cellulose. They can be broken down to release energy in the animal body. |
Protein | A substance made of chains of amino acids found in food and drink such as meat, eggs and milk. Essential for human/animal diets and are found in cells. Make up the basic components of body tissues like hair, muscles and skin. |
Fat | A natural oily or greasy substance occurring in animal bodies as a layer under the skin used for energy storage and warmth. |
Vitamins | Organic compounds that are essential for normal body growth and nutrition in small quantities because they cannot be synthesized by the body. |
Minerals | An inorganic substance needed by the human body for proper growth and good health such as iron, calcium or potassium. |
Balance | A condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions. |
Variety | The quality or state of being different or diverse. |
Moderation | The avoidance of excess or extremes. Within reasonable limits. |
