Term | Definition |
Acceleration | change in an object’s motion (position, direction, speed) |
Average Speed | the total distance traveled by an object over a total amount of time |
Balanced Force | equal and opposite forces on an object that result in no change in position, direction, or motion |
Constant Speed | when an object’s speed remains unchanged |
Displacement | how far an object has moved from its original position |
Kinetic Energy | energy of motion |
Potential Energy | stored energy of an object because of its position or shape |
Unbalanced Force | unequal forces on an object that may result in a change in position, direction, or motion |
Acceleration | caused by unbalanced forces |
Displacement | the difference between the final and initial positions |
Chemical Energy | energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules of substances |
Elastic Energy | stored in objects by force |
Electrical Energy | movement of electrons |
Energy | the ability to cause change or do work |
Energy Conservation | management of the use of energy resources |
Energy Resources | natural resources that can be used as a source of energy to do work |
Energy Transformations | process of energy changing from one form to another |
Law of Conservation of Energy | states that energy is neither created or destroyed; it only changes form (transforms) |
LIght Energy | energy from light waves |
Mechanical Energy | movement of objects or substances from one place to another |
Nonrenewable | natural resources that cannot be replaced once depleted |
Radiation | the transfer of energy from a light source to an object or substance |
Renewable | natural resources that can be replaced by nature |
Sound Energy | movement of waves through a substance or object caused by vibrations |
Thermal Energy | a form of kinetic energy resulting from the motion of particles that is transferred as heat |
Conduction | the transfer of heat energy by direct contact |
Convection | the movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink creating a current |
Transform | changing from one form to another (e.g., energy transformation) |
Chemical Energy | food, biomass, petroleum, natural gas, and propane |
Elastic Energy | stretched rubber band or balloon |
Electrical Energy | electrons moving through wires is electricity; lightning |
LIght Energy | electromagnetic waves like solar and light bulbs |
Nonrenewable | oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear |
Radiation | Heat transfer from the Sun, fire, light bulb, or burner to an object or substance |
