What's an Enzyme? | Protein molecule, biological catalyst. |
What's the Function of an Enzyme? | Speeds up the Chemical Reaction without afflicting itself |
Substrate | Reactant in the enzymatic reaction. |
Ribozymes | Enzyme made up of RNA instead of protein. Biological catalyst. |
Metabolic pathway | Series of linked reactions |
Active site | Part of Enzyme that directly interacts with substrate. Changes slightly to accommodate substrates |
Degradation | Substrate broken down into it's products |
Synthesis | Substrates combined to produce larger products |
What factors are involved with the speed of the enzymatic reaction? | pH, Temperature, or inhibitors. |
Denaturation | Prevents enzymes from binding with substrates efficiently by changing the shape of the enzyme. |
Cofactors | Inorganic ions or non-protein organic molecules required at the active site of an enzyme. |
Coenzymes | Non-protein organic molecules, may accept / contribute atoms to the reactions |
