mucus | a thick, sticky material that protects the stomach and intestinal linings from enzymes and stomach acid |
pancreas | an organ located below the stomach that makes three different enzymes |
physical change | occurs when large food pieces are broken down into smaller pieces |
saliva | a liquid that is formed in the mouth and contains an enzyme |
salivary gland | three pairs of small glands located under the tongue and behind the jaw |
small intestine | a long, hollow tube-like organ where most of the chemical digestion of food takes place |
stomach | a bag-like, muscular organ that mixes and chemically changes protein |
villi | the finger-like parts on the lining of the small intestine |
