Term | Definition |
Classification | The systematic grouping of different types of organisms by their shared characteristics. |
Domain | One of three divisions in a classification system based on different types of cells. The six kingdoms are grouped into three domains: Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. |
Archaea (Domain) | A domain of single-celled microorganisms. These microbes are prokaryotes, meaning they have no cell nucleus. They are found in harsh environments. |
Bacteria (Domain) | A domain of single-celled microorganisms. These microbes are prokaryotes, meaning they have no cell nucleus. They are found everywhere. |
Eukarya (Domain) | A domain of organisms having cells each with a distinct nucleus within which the genetic material is contained. |
Eukaryote | An organism consisting of a cell or cells in which the genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes contained within a distinct nucleus. |
Prokaryote | Single-celled organism that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles |
Protista | Includes eukaryotic organisms that cannot be classified as a plant, animal, or fungus. They are mostly unicellular, but some, are multicellular. Part of Domain Eukarya. |
Kingdom Fungi | Includes multicellular organisms such as mushrooms, molds and single-celled yeasts. Part of Domain Eukarya. |
Kingdom Plantae | Includes multicellular organisms, such as trees, grass, and moss that are capable of photosynthesis capturing energy from the sun. Part of Domain Eukarya. |
Kingdom Animalia | Includes multicellular organisms, from human and lions to insects and microbes, that rely on food for energy. Part of Domain Eukarya. |
Autotrophic | An organism that captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce energy-rich carbon compounds, usually through the process of photosynthesis. |
Heterotroph | An organism that consumes other organisms to get energy. |
Sexual reproduction | A type of reproduction in which two cells combine to form offspring. (Having two parents) |
Asexual reproduction | The process by which a single organism produces offspring that have the same genetic material. (Having one parent) |
Kingdom Archaebacteria | Includes microscopic single-celled organisms with a distinctive cell structure that allows them to live in extreme environments. Part of Domain Archaea. |
Kingdom Eubacteria | Includes microscopic single-celled organisms found in many environments. Bacteria can be associated with disease in other organisms. Part of Domain Bacteria. |
