Term | Definition |
Non-vascular Plant | plants that do not have tubes and do not have true roots, leaves or stems |
Vascular Plant | plants with tubes that conduct materials throughout the plant |
Gymnosperm | a seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary or fruit but by a cone. |
Angiosperm | a flowering plant whose seeds are covered by an ovary or fruit |
Taproot | one main root with many smaller roots branching from it |
Fibrous root | several main roots that branches to make a bunch of thin roots |
Rhizoid | a root like structure in nonvascular plants that hold the plants in place and helps plants get water and nutrients |
Xylem | transport tubes that carry water up the plant |
Phloem | transport tubes that carry water down the plant |
Cuticle | a waxy layer that coats the leaves and stems to reduce water loss |
Epidermis | a layer of cells on the surface of a leaf or stem |
Stomata/Stoma | openings in a leaf that allow carbon dioxide in and oxygen out |
Guard Cells | curved cells around a stoma that control the opening and closing of the stoma |
Transpiration | process by which plants let water vapor out - loss of water through the leaves |
Pistil | female reproductive organs of an angiosperm |
Ovary | the lower part of the pistil that produces eggs or ovules |
Stamen | the male reproductive organ in an angiosperm that produces pollen |
Anther | makes the pollen |
Petal | colorful structure that attracts pollinators |
Sepal | modified leaf that protects the bud |
Pollen | Sperm of the plant |
Fruit | Ripened ovary of a flowering plant |
Tropism | growth in particular movements |
Herbaceous Stem | green and flexible stem |
Woody Stem | hard bark like stem - usually bark on a tree |
