temporal artery | pulsation is palpable anterior to the ear |
acromegaly | abnormal enlargement of the skull, bony facial structures, and bones of the extremities, caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone |
craniosynostosis | abnormal shape of the skull d/t premature ossification of one or more suture lines before brain growth is complete |
hypertelorism | abnormal width between the eyes |
axis | 2nd cervical vertebra |
Bell's palsy | idiopathic facial palsy of CN VII resulting in asymmetry of the palpebral fissures, nasolabial folds, mouth and facial expression on the affected side |
isthmus (of the thyroid) | narrow portion of the thyroid gland that connects the two lobes and lies over the tracheal rings |
atlas | 1st cervical vertebra |
cranial bones | includes frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal bones |

down syndrome | congenital chromosomal aberration (trisomy 21) marked by slanted eyes w/ inner epicanthal folds, a short flat nose, a protruding thick tongue, and mental retardation |
anterior triangle | area of the neck formed by the mandible, trachea and sternomastoid muscle, contains the anterior cervical lymph notes, the trachea and the thyroid gland |
sutures | immovable joints connecting the cranial bones |
lipoma | nonmobile fatty mass with a smooth circular edge |
goiter | enlargement of the thyroid gland |
torticollis | lateral deviation of the neck; intermittent or sustained dystonic contraction of the muscles on one side of the neck |
hydrocephalus | enlargement of the head without enlargement of the facial structures; d/t increased accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricles of the brain |
vertebra prominens | the long spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra (C7) is palpable when the head is flexed |
bregma | junction of the coronal and saggital sutures |
posterior triangle | area of the neck between the sternomastoid and the trapezius muscles, with the clavicle at the base, contains the posterior cervical lymph nodes |
salivary glands | include the parotid glands in the cheeks over the mandible, the submandibular glands beneath the mandible and the sublingual glands in the floor of the mouth |
