birth defects | abnormalities that are apparent at birth |
cheiloplasty | surgical repair of a cleft lip |
cleft lip | fissure or a opening in the upper lip |
clubfoot | one of the most common deformities, a congenital abnormality characterized by a foot that has been twisted inward or outward |
congenital malformations | those defects present at birth, according to body systems |
erythroblastosis fetalis | A hemolytic disease caused when the mother is Rh positive and the baby is Rh negative |
habiliation | treatment of a patient who is handicapped from birth therefore is learning, not relearning, a task |
hydrocephalus | an increase of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the ventricles of the brain |
hyperbilirubinemia | an excessive amount of bilirubin in the blood; more commonly seen in association with hemolytic disorders of the newborn, infection, and extreme cold stress. |
kernicterus | accumulation of bilirubin in the brain tissues |
macrosomia | An abnormally large infant, or neonatal birth weight above the 90th percentile |
Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) | Group of symptoms that occur when the fetus or newborn aspirates meconium-stained amniotic fluid into the lungs |
Meningocele | (Membrane tumor) contains portion of the membranes and CSF |
Meningomyocele | A sac-like cyst containing the meninges, spinal cord, and fluid that has herniated through the spinal column, usually via some form of anatomical defeat of the bony spinal canal |
Myelodysplasia | Also known as spina bifida refers to a group of central nervous system disorders chracterised by malformation of the spinal cord |
Neonatal abstinence syndrome | Occurs when the fetus has prenatal exposure to drugs such as opiates, amphetamines transquilizers, or multiple illicit drugs while in utero |
Ortolani's sign | The physician can actually feel and hear the femoral head slip back into the acetabulum under gentle pressure. Suggest developmental hip dysplasia |
Pavlik Harness | Maintains hip abduction in developmental hip dysplasia |
Phototherapy | Used to reduce bilirubin levels |
RhoGam | An immune globulin given to the mother (not the infant) after delivery of an Rh-positive infant to an Rh-negative mother |
Shunt | A bypass |
Spica cast | Encircles the waist and extends to the ankles or toes |
Spina bifida | (Divided spine) a congenital embryonic neural tube defect in which there is an imperfect closure of the spinal vertebrae |
Transient tachypnea of the newborn | Usually occurs after a cesarean section birth or an uneventful vaginal delivery of a term infant. Characterized by tachypnea, chest retractions, grunting, and mild cyanosis. |
Transillumination | The inspection of a cavity or organ by passing light through its walls- simple diagnostic procedure use in visualizing fluid |
